So, if you know someone with bipolar disorder, you better spend a little of your time to read this article because there are several things you need to know about bipolar disorder.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

We will start with the definition of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is one of the mental illnesses that is marked by extreme shifts in mood ranging from a manic to a depressive state. A person with this disease usually feels excited, impulsive, euphoric, and full of energy.

They might have risky or unhealthy behavior. Drug use, spending sprees, and impulsive or unprotected sex are common during manic episodes. They will feel deep sadness and hopelessness that causes a loss of energy, interest, and motivation to do all activities. This phase usually leads to a period when they get too little or too much sleep. If it gets worse, suicidal thoughts or attempts may come to them.

However, there are times that they seem in a normal mood. That is why they usually have problems in maintaining personal relationships. Therefore, bipolar help is desperately needed.

The Types of Bipolar Disorder

Before we discuss how to help the patient, you also need to know the type of this disease. There are four types of bipolar disorder. The first one is Bipolar I Disorder. It will show at least one manic episode and one or more major depressive episodes. Bipolar I disorder is equally common in men and women.

The next one is called Bipolar II Disorder. People with this type of bipolar disorder will experience major depression. The next one is Cyclothymic Disorder that can be seen from the mood swings that are less severe. The last one is Rapid-Cycling Bipolar Disorder that causes rapid changes in mood.

Tips for Helping People with Bipolar Disorder

You can help your loved one that has bipolar disorder with bipolar help. The first one you can do is learning about the disease well. You have to know the symptoms, causes, treatments, etc. in order to be able to help them.

The next one is to listen and pay attention to what they say. If other people treat them as if they are unimportant or scary, make sure you do not do that. You can also ask them directly about how you can help them when they are in their normal mood. When you notice some changes such as changes in mood, you better catch it early and quickly do something because early treatment does make a big difference.

The next thing you need to do is encouraging them to stick with treatment. It is very important to get regular checkup and medication. You also need to make sure they get enough sleep and far from alcohol and drugs. Patience is what you need to have while helping them go through it. Make sure to also take care of yourself.
