Actually, the catapult is a kind of traditional toy which can be used to throw pebbles. Children usually play catapult to shoot little bird or even fruit on the tree. Through this article, we will not give you steps in how to build a catapult for children’s pleasure.
This article is dedicated to those who have catapult project in physics subject. This kind of catapult has bigger arms with a large base. You may wonder what it will cost too much time and money to build this project. As long you can be smart and accurate in maximizing all the stuff, you can be fast and effective in finishing this subject.
You will be guided to make a powerful catapult with long arms and fulcrum in the center. In order to make the ammunition thrown fast, your catapult will be modified with some springs. These are some steps that you have to make.
The basic material that you have to need is wood. This is a must for you to choose the strong kinds of woods like mahogany or almond. Besides having strong texture, those kinds of woods can be shaped and cut easily.
After finding one of the best one, you have to make sure that the chosen lumber has flat and sturdy surface. This will be used to build and shape the base of your catapult. A strong base will surely determine the power of your catapult. You have to measure and lay out the lumber for two different sides.
The first wide require you to measure with 36” x 2” x 4” meters (length x thickness x width). Then, the second measurement will be smaller in 15” x 2” x 4” meters. After getting the accurate measurement, you have to screw to join the left-side and left-base. You can stop screwing the lumber board after getting two holes for each. The diameter of the whole can be matched with the ideal shape of the nail or screw. Then, you can join every single lumber cut with screws. In order to strengthen your base, you can add some glue after the screws are planted.
After making the right and left bases, this is the time for you to construct the support boards. You need to cut 15” x 0.5” x 8.5” meters of square lumber. Then, you can nail these support board on the outside of your base structure.
You are not allowed to use bigger nails because it can harm the construction. The little ones are good as long they can join the support boar with the base structure. When you have added the support board, you can form the arms. This part is very crucial which require you to make an accurate measurement.
For the arms, you can take 30” x 2” 4’ meters lumber with flat surfaces. Both arms will be nailed to support the board. In the middle of arms, you have to make an anchor to launch the ammunition. On the top of the anchor, you can plant a cup there. This will be functioned to grab your ammunition before being thrown. The anchor must be supported with strong and flexible lacing to make the powerful action.
You can make the lacing from the rope. You have to make side to side lacing for a powerful catapult. You can wrap the anchor with the handle and make a strong loop as well as you can. This lacing must be reversed and repeated. You can pass to the opposite side and repeat this action at least for six times. This way will be effective to make a strong and flexible lacing from a rope. Those are the steps in how to build a catapult.
